Yesterday was registration at school for Ali and Zach. In all my twelve years of registering the kids for school, I’ve never enjoyed it. I’m the parent of our family who usually goes to registration, and usually both kids join me. This year, it was just Zach. He gets a little excited about registration day. I don’t.
I love having the kids home from school during the summer. I love the more relaxed schedule we have (even though this summer has been busier than most). I have never enjoyed the first day of school. Some moms can’t wait for their kids to go back. That’s not the case with me.
I filled out the necessary forms. One form was to write in Ali’s legal name, and how it should appear on her high school diploma. (Gulp. This seemed so surreal.) This will be the last year I will register Ali for high school. And next year, Zach could be driving to school. Crazy.
When we got to the front of the line, Zach watched me write out the check for $381. I don’t think he had any idea how much registration costs. With our family activity pass, Ali’s parking pass, money in their lunch accounts, and registration fees…it all adds up.
Our normal routine on registration day is to follow registration with school supply shopping. We stopped at Staples and purchased a few things Zach needed from the list–which I forgot on our kitchen table. We had to go from memory, and did pretty well actually. We’ll have to go back again, though, and get the things we missed.
The days are counting down…17 until school starts. I’m cherishing evey one of them!
