Out My Kitchen Window

by | Apr 17, 2010 | spring

I was getting ready to leave our home last night for our Thursday night Bible Study at Mission of Hope, but before I left, I went to the kitchen to grab something quick to eat for my dinner on the go…a string cheese stick, and a handful of pretzels.

As I glanced out of my kitchen window, which I do often, I saw our neighbor, Dave, on his riding lawn mower mowing his lawn.  I don’t know why, but the sight of him mowing stopped me in my tracks…and it brought a smile to my face.

The smile was brought on by the thoughts that were running through my head at the time (with my string cheese and pretzels in my hand).  I believe this is the first time Dave mowed his lawn this spring…we haven’t done ours yet, but need to soon.  I felt a sense of comfort, seeing him and knowing the long winter we had is definately over, spring is in full swing, and I’ll get the privilege of seeing Dave mow his lawn each week now through the end of summer.  This was a familiar sight to me every summer since we’ve lived here, and it was comforting to have that sight back again this year! 🙂

Dave reminds me of my dad in ways.  He takes great care of what God has given him, including his lawn.  Each week he’ll be on his riding lawn mower, cutting his grass and keeping their home looking nice.  Dave works a full time job during the day, and has to be tired when he gets home.  Yet, he never puts off mowing when it needs to be done.  As I think about it now, I’ve never seen their grass get too long.  I don’t think he has a single thread of procrastination in his body…even when he must be tired after a long day at work.

It made me also think about my neighbors, and how very thankful I am to have the neighbors we have.  Even though they each live 1/4-1/2 mile away from us, I know we can count on each of them if needed.

I also thought yesterday, each time I see Dave mowing his lawn this year, I am going to be reminded to pray for him, his wife and his family.  One if his daughters is a special friend of mine, and I was also reminded yesterday I need to touch base with her this next week before more time passes because of our full lives. I miss her!

I doubt Dave realized mowing his lawn made such an impact on me yesterday…but I guess that’s the case most of the time.  We can make an impact on others without even knowing it.  🙂

There's a group of special women out there who, for one reason or another, show up to church alone.

At a former church, an entire row was filled with us women who came without spouses or families, and we created quite a bond. We knew we needed it--and each other.

I get it--it's not so easy to do somedays, walking in alone, sitting by oneself, but every time, God meets me there.

If you went to church by yourself or know someone who did today, I see you. I'm with you. I am praying for you. Keep showing up. Your presence matters more than you know.

Sometimes the most sacred moments don’t look polished. Sometimes they include a book, a lap full of grandsons, and yes—even a finger in a nose.😉

But this? This is legacy.
This is love.
This is what matters right now.🩷

You don’t have to have it all together to make a difference.
Your presence is enough. Your faithfulness is forming something eternal.🌸

Keep showing up, even when life feels messy. God is using it all. 🙌

The voice in your head doesn’t get the final say.
Let’s trade the lies for truth today—and speak to ourselves the way God does.

This is your reminder that God doesn’t require perfection—just your presence.

You don’t have to crush every task or look Pinterest-perfect doing it.
You’re doing holy work, even in messy buns and yesterday’s mascara. 💁‍♀️

My good friends since 5th grade, Karen and Sheila, joined me on the podcast this week. When I asked them what suggestions they had for someone who's struggling with negative self-talk or degrading thoughts, Sheila shared her wisdom in saying to look for the positive. There's always something positive. But sometimes we get fixed on the negative instead. We need to remember the positive.

Isn't this true? What are you focused on today? The negative or the positive? What positive can you remember today?

What do you do to change your mindset when it needs some changing?

My friends, Karen Wacker and Sheila Schulte, joined me on the podcast this week, and they both shared their wisdom and inspiration. I love what Karen said about what she does to change her mindset. This might encourage you today, too.
