Lessons & Letting Our Hair Down On Vacation

by | Jul 8, 2014 | family life, This Lefe Family

Sometimes it’s good to let your hair down a little.

In fact, sometimes it’s necessary.

I was able to do that on our recent family vacation.

The four of us spent a week in Pensacola Beach, soaking up the sun, the fun, and each other’s presence. It was a beautiful time, filled with joy and laughter, relaxation and rest.

It’s just what this girl–and this family–needed.

As I always seem to, I learned some lessons and valuable truths on vacation. Please allow me to share them with you through the photos below.

1. I think we all may be a little addicted to our mobile devices.

2. There’s no place like the beach.

3. It’s worth it to sit out in the 90 degree sun for an hour, waiting to watch the Blue Angels practice.

4. It’s a blessing to have grown and teenage children who still enjoy hanging out with Mom and Dad.

5. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves is the perfect alarm clock.

6. You can get creative with seaweed. In fact, it’s kind of fun doing so! Here we cheered on our friend and favorite race car driver back home with it on the beach!

7. Ketchup tastes even better when made into a smiley face.

8. Next time we go to Beale Street in Memphis we need to eat there before 8pm. Minors cannot get in to most restaurants after that time.

9. Even on the days when we feel like a bug-splattered windshield, our lives can still be beautiful.

10. There’s nothing like watching your son from across the table as he cheers on “his” soccer team–Team USA–in a restaurant with 100+ people, who unbeknownst to us, are cheering them on too.

11. Training for RAGBRAI (a week-long bicycle ride across Iowa) was much more fun in Florida!

12. Dolphins are pretty amazing creatures.

13. God blessed us with priceless memories. This is why we take vacations.

Am I the only one?

Distraction doesn’t always show up loud and obvious.
Sometimes it’s subtle.
Convenient.
Even well-intentioned.

But here’s the truth:
if the enemy of our souls can't destroy us—he will do all he can to distract us.

Let’s return.
Refocus.
Reopen the Word.
God’s not mad at us—we’re just one “Jesus, I am back” away from real connection.

Distractions are just annoyances in life, right? They are that, but are so much more.🚨

We live in a world of distraction, so naturally, we will be enticed by the distractions of this world. Distractions aren't just aren't annoyances, however, but they are actually keeping us from living the abundant life God has for us. 🤦‍♀️

Living distracted affects everything we do and how we live, including our relationships, our peace, and our ability to hear God's voice clearly. They are causing us to miss priceless moments happening right in front of us every single day. 🙋‍♀️

When we are distracted, we almost become like the seed sown among thorns in Matthew 13:22, where distractions choke out the life of the Word in us. We become stagnant and ineffective in our faith and life. Here's what it says,
Funny how fast we can go from focus to full-on Googling the most random things, right?

Let this be your gentle reminder—you don’t have to chase every thought that pops into your head.

Some things can wait.
Some tabs don’t need to be opened.
And no, you don’t need to reorganize your junk drawer right now.

Let’s choose presence over distraction today. (But also… yes, penguins do have knees.)

Feeling distracted today?

We live in a culture of distraction, so it's no wonder you and I battle distractions on a daily basis. Distractions aren't just annoyances, but they keep us from living the abundant lives Jesus came to give us.

In episode 193 of the Encouragement for Real Life Podcast, we continue our theme of the month of Spring Cleaning for the Soul as we address these distractions and how to overcome them. Listen in to be encouraged.

You can find the full episode wherever you listen to podcasts or @julielefebure. Comment PODCAST and I'll send it to you.

Stay encouraged, friend!
