Burned Out Christmas Lights

by | Dec 13, 2013 | Christmas, journey, me

There’s nothing more frustrating to me during Christmastime than when a part of a string of Christmas lights burns out.

That’s what I found when I pulled into our driveway this evening.
It seems like it happens to us each year. This year it’s with the garland that I have strung around our front door. Half of it is lit. Half of it is dark. I guess it’s time to switch those out to LED lights too, as all of our other lights were switched out this year.
So I’ll need to stop by Target tomorrow, pick up another light set, and some time soon in this frigid weather, take the garland down and change out the string of lights.
It could be worse right?
Yes.
My thoughts tonight put everything back into perspective.
Seven years ago tonight I was watching my mom suffer. I was watching her lie in her hospital bed, so sick with sepsis. That took her life four days later. Christmas that year took on a whole new meaning for our family. It’s hard to believe next Monday she’ll be gone seven years.
So compared with that, what’s a burned out string of lights? Nothing. It’s not a matter of life or death. It won’t affect the outcome of anything. It’s just a minor inconvenience.
I’ll take the minor inconveniences. And on a side note, I sure miss my mom.
Merry Christmas!!

It may not appear so now but this disappointment isn't the end.

God can be trusted with it to bring something about something good. Keep your heart hopeful, your eyes lifted, and your prayers consistent.

He is with you, friend.

It’s easy to overlook the value of “here” when we’re longing for “there.” But God often grows the deepest roots in the most overlooked places. Don’t rush the season. Be present. Be faithful. He’s doing something beautiful beneath the surface.

Where might God be inviting you to bloom today—even if it feels like unexpected soil?
