Love Others… More or Less?

by | Oct 4, 2014 | 31 Days Loving God Loving Others

Yesterday’s detour was timely, as we pondered loving ourselves before we can effectively love others. I hope you
came away with a fresh perspective and a truthful reminder of who you really are. I did.

Loving ourselves the way God created us and sees us helps us to love others the way God created them and sees them.

We’re back on the path today, and on Day 4.

31 Days of Loving God and Loving Others. We began here if you missed it.

Matthew 22:39 reads, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:39 Love others as well as you love yourself.I like how The Message translation puts it, “Love others as well as you love yourself.”

As well as you love yourself. Not more. Not less. Along with. In like manner. Conjointly. (Conjointly?? I don’t think I’ve ever said–or written–that word in my life!)

Just as much as you love yourself.

Then why do we sometimes elevate ourselves (at least in our minds) above someone else? Why do I sometimes think my needs are more important than than my husband’s? Or why do I seem to find time to do the things that are important to me, but forget to do something that might be important to another?

On the other hand, why do we lower ourselves below another? Why do we ever perceive ourselves as less-than? Why do I compare myself to someone else, and end up feeling like a loser? (I pray you don’t ever do this!)

The thing is, God doesn’t want us to do either.

Can we just embrace each other’s differences, instead? See each one of us as the unique creations God made us to be?? To celebrate the success of others, and support them in their failures? (More on this coming soon!) To not put our needs above anyone else’s? Nor to fall prey to comparing ourselves with another.

Love others as well as we love ourselves.

With God’s help we can.

When we understand God created us all different, yet loves us all the same, we begin to see ourselves and others in proper light. We can love others and ourselves the way we were meant to.

Today, I encourage you to show love to someone near to you in a way that demonstrates God’s love. Hold your spouses hand unexpectedly. Cuddle with your child. Speak encouraging words to a friend. I have a family wedding today, so I’ll have lots of opportunities to show love. I’d love to read your ideas below!

Also, show yourself some love. Do something just for you. A bubble bath. A wonderful cup of coffee. A long walk. Whatever it is that you love, do it just for you. I plan to give myself a fresh manicure (and a cup of coffee) after finishing this post. Share below what you plan to do (or did) for yourself.

Love others as well as we love ourselves.

What a joy it is to be on this journey of loving God and loving others with you!

Until tomorrow,

Julie

Hey Julie. I really like your suggestion about doing something to show love to someone else AND something nice for yourself today. The Message version of that verse adds a new dimension to it for sure.

Hi Betsy! Thank you for swinging by today. Sometimes The Message speaks to me in ways I hadn’t seen a passage before and helps me understand it in a deeper way. Hope you’re having a great weekend, friend!

This is your reminder that God doesn’t require perfection—just your presence.

You don’t have to crush every task or look Pinterest-perfect doing it.
You’re doing holy work, even in messy buns and yesterday’s mascara. 💁‍♀️

My good friends since 5th grade, Karen and Sheila, joined me on the podcast this week. When I asked them what suggestions they had for someone who's struggling with negative self-talk or degrading thoughts, Sheila shared her wisdom in saying to look for the positive. There's always something positive. But sometimes we get fixed on the negative instead. We need to remember the positive.

Isn't this true? What are you focused on today? The negative or the positive? What positive can you remember today?

What do you do to change your mindset when it needs some changing?

My friends, Karen Wacker and Sheila Schulte, joined me on the podcast this week, and they both shared their wisdom and inspiration. I love what Karen said about what she does to change her mindset. This might encourage you today, too.

What's that Bible verse? 📖
If your energy’s gone and your to-do list still feels long, take this as permission to exhale.

God isn’t asking for perfection—just your presence.

Rest is holy.
So is grace.

Don't miss this if you could use a belly laugh today! 🤣

This is what happens when you invite on the podcast two friends who you've known you since 5th grade, Sheila and Karen. 🩵

Sheila says it perfectly,
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m not enough... I’ll never get it right... I’m failing at everything”?

You’re not alone—and those words aren’t the truth.

Join us for She Speaks Life, a special morning created for women just like you—women who are tired of the negative self-talk and ready to replace it with God’s truth. Together, we’ll learn to speak life over ourselves, find freedom in our identity in Christ, and encourage one another in a space full of grace.

Come as you are. Leave refreshed, encouraged, and reminded of the power your words hold.

Bring a friend. There’s a seat for you. 💛
