It’s Five Minute Friday! (How can it be Friday already??) It’s that time of the week where I hook up with some of the most amazing people at lisajobaker.com –as I let my mind race with words and my fingers fly on my keyboard. Without any concern for grammer, punctuation, spelling, all those sorts of things. All centered around a one-word subject. This week’s word is:
–NOTHING–
Go!
NOTHING can get me more frustrated than when there is NOTHING I can do to fix a situation.
Take for example right now my teenage son.
He plays high school soccer.
It’s his thing, and it’s what he loves to do.
Tonight his team (our team) won in the 2nd round of post-season play. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever attended.
Yet, my son wasn’t able to play in tonight’s game. He was injured in a game three weeks ago when he took a soccer ball to his face, namely to his left eye. He ended up with a hyphema. Google it. It’s pretty serious.
He could see NOTHING out of that eye that night. NOTHING. Scary. Frightening. Question after question. Prayer after prayer. This mom wanted some answers. This mom wanted to transfer his injury to me. I felt so helpless doing NOTHING.
Thankfully, his sight has returned, but he’s under strict doctor’s orders to do NOTHING physically until after Monday’s follow-up appointment.
Do you know how hard this is for a 17-year old boy?? To do NOTHING?
Oh, I can see in his eyes how he desires to be on that field. I hear it in his cheers for his fellow teammates. And I sense the not-understanding-why-this-happened unasked questions in those silent and saying NOTHING times.
But his injury is completely out of his hands and mine.
There’s NOTHING he can do to fix it, and worse yet, there’s NOTHING this mom can do to fix it. NOTHING.
You better believe I’m praying for complete and total healing! And we’re trusting God for an encouraging report on Monday.
God continues to teach me. When times come and there’s NOTHING I can do about them, I can give them to the One who can do something about them. And so I have.
And that goes for you too. 🙂
This mom would sure appreciate your prayers for this pretty cool son of mine these next few days! We are praying for complete healing and for NOTHING…no serious internal injury, no lasting effects, no complications for either now or down the road.
Stop.

Oh how my heart goes out to you! I have a seventeen-year-old son as well. Your post is filled with the truth and you shared beautifully how the Lord is the One who can do something when we can do nothing but sit at His feet and pray. I’m praying that Christ will do the miraculous and heal your son completely and build your son’s faith in a great way.

Zach was one of the first kids out on the field congratulating his team – there’s a great photo of him! He has certainly shown the team what it means to be a genuine friend supporting his team no matter what. He is able to do that because he has the support of a loving family and a heart that knows Christ. Well done Mom!
