Continuing the theme from yesterday’s post of embracing the fact that we are beautiful, treasured, sacred in God’s eyes…
I have observed for some time now how women interact with other women. Some of what I’ve seen is disheartening. Oftentimes women look at other women and they begin to compare themselves. When we as women do that, we either elevate ourselves in our minds above the other person, thinking we are superior, or we tear ourselves down, thinking we are less-than.
Both are so unhealthy, and are not what God wants us to do. He made us in His image. We are created in His likeness. We are to appreciate our uniqueness, and everyone else’s too. No one else was made exactly like you or me. That, in itself, is pretty special!
Getting real here…So why do I compare my thighs to someone whose thighs are smaller than mine?? I will never have small thighs. Sure, I do what I can to tone them, but I will never have what I consider “perfect” thighs. Oftentimes, I admit that’s the first thing I compare with someone else. Why do I do that?
Or I’ll compare my lack of desire to read lots of books to someone who loves to read, or my simple cooking skills to someone who is a great in the kitchen. That just doesn’t make any sort of sense, does it? I don’t believe I’m the only one who does this silliness!
During these times of comparing, I tend to forget what God has blessed me with.
Gifts and talents that He’s given me to use for His glory. I forget how He’s made me to be unique, and He made me that way I am…not to use anything as an excuse, but a reason to accept myself the way I am and to celebrate that! It’s okay that my favorite thing to do isn’t reading, and it’s okay for me to enjoy writing instead. It’s okay that cooking doesn’t bring me joy, but for some strange reason, doing laundry does. 🙂
And even if I don’t have the skinniest thighs, my ab/oblique muscles are strong enough to crack a rib!! (Joking, of course!) 🙂
Psalm 139:13-14 The Message translation reads, “Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God–you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration–what a creation!“
That right there is enough reason to celebrate!
May we appreciate today how God made us, and be thankful for how unique each one of us is. Then live that out each day. May we stop comparing ourselves to others, and be grateful for the gifts God gave us and for how He created us!
We each have much to be thankful for!
