This week, one of my dear friends since 5th grade–Karen, lost her mother after a lengthy battle with cancer.
My heart aches for her in knowing the pain she is experiencing now and will experience over the next few months and years.
Yesterday at the gravesite service after the funeral, my thoughts were enveloped with the overwhelming memories of just eleven short months ago, when I was in Karen’s position at my own mother’s gravesite service. I was reliving my emotions and pain through Karen’s. Tears streamed down my face for what seemed like the entire service. I hugged Karen after the service was over, as we were both shivering–probably due to the combination of the chilly breeze and our emotions. She whispered to me, “I don’t like being part of this club.” Her words continued to ring through my mind yesterday. You know, I don’t like being a part of this club either…the club where many of us have lost or are losing our earthly parents in death.
As I mentioned, my mother passed away last December, just a few days before Christmas. My father passed away eight years ago. I understand the pain in losing parents. It’s the most unimaginable pain I’ve ever experienced–and that I’m still experiencing! That’s why I knew I had to be there for Karen and will honor God by being there for her in the weeks, months and years to come. As we age, our parents age. Many more of us will experience what Karen and I have gone through. If you have already, you know what I’m talking about.
I have a peace in knowing my parents are with the Lord, and Karen’s mom joined them this week. I look forward to my reunion with them some day. If you’re parents are still on this earth, will you honor God by either calling them or spending time with them today? Will you tell them how much they mean to you? If you are a believer, and they are not, will you share with them today how much God loves them and wants them to be with Him for eternity? And if your parents are no longer on this earth, will you reach out to others who are in their own grieving process? Ask God how you can help them–He’ll show you.
May God bless you today as you live a life that honors Him!
