Out My Kitchen Window

by | Apr 17, 2010 | spring

I was getting ready to leave our home last night for our Thursday night Bible Study at Mission of Hope, but before I left, I went to the kitchen to grab something quick to eat for my dinner on the go…a string cheese stick, and a handful of pretzels.

As I glanced out of my kitchen window, which I do often, I saw our neighbor, Dave, on his riding lawn mower mowing his lawn.  I don’t know why, but the sight of him mowing stopped me in my tracks…and it brought a smile to my face.

The smile was brought on by the thoughts that were running through my head at the time (with my string cheese and pretzels in my hand).  I believe this is the first time Dave mowed his lawn this spring…we haven’t done ours yet, but need to soon.  I felt a sense of comfort, seeing him and knowing the long winter we had is definately over, spring is in full swing, and I’ll get the privilege of seeing Dave mow his lawn each week now through the end of summer.  This was a familiar sight to me every summer since we’ve lived here, and it was comforting to have that sight back again this year! 🙂

Dave reminds me of my dad in ways.  He takes great care of what God has given him, including his lawn.  Each week he’ll be on his riding lawn mower, cutting his grass and keeping their home looking nice.  Dave works a full time job during the day, and has to be tired when he gets home.  Yet, he never puts off mowing when it needs to be done.  As I think about it now, I’ve never seen their grass get too long.  I don’t think he has a single thread of procrastination in his body…even when he must be tired after a long day at work.

It made me also think about my neighbors, and how very thankful I am to have the neighbors we have.  Even though they each live 1/4-1/2 mile away from us, I know we can count on each of them if needed.

I also thought yesterday, each time I see Dave mowing his lawn this year, I am going to be reminded to pray for him, his wife and his family.  One if his daughters is a special friend of mine, and I was also reminded yesterday I need to touch base with her this next week before more time passes because of our full lives. I miss her!

I doubt Dave realized mowing his lawn made such an impact on me yesterday…but I guess that’s the case most of the time.  We can make an impact on others without even knowing it.  🙂
